故事发生在民国初年的河北某地，青年（王道饰）忍痛离开了刚刚结婚没多久的新婚妻子（张艾嘉饰），只身一人前往东北孙家台谋生，一晃眼就是两年过去。两年后，青年回到了妻子身边，两人在一间草屋里安了家。可是幸福的生活没过多久，青年遭人殴打身受重伤卧床不起，家里一下子就断了经济来源，无奈之下，青年只得将妻子抵押给了妓院，只希望自己能够早日康复，将妻子从魔窟之中赎回来。青年虽然恢复了劳动能力，可是恨自己赚钱太慢，于是将全部的希望都寄托到了赌博上，最后自然输得精光。于是，当一名巡管看上了青年的妻子，想要娶她做妾后，青年忍痛答应了。。J.G.
