The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。1980年代，应届毕业生闻清（李萍 饰）在家积极复习，准备迎接次年的高考。弟弟闻涛（王保社 饰）的朋友林旷（叶晖 饰），人称“数学王子”，在串门补习中，俩人逐渐产生好感，并相互憧憬着将来的大学生活。不久，闻清如愿考进大学校园，林旷却背弃前诺，报名参军去了云南前线。这突然的变故让闻清不知所措，考虑再三，她结束了与林旷的恋爱关系。后来，传来了林旷在边境排雷触雷身亡的噩耗。一晃几年过去了，毕业的闻清有了舒适的工作和家庭。在一次偶然机会，她碰到林旷生前的战友，从其口中得知林旷英雄事迹，悔恨之情溢满心头......。老同学杨丹（马艳丽 饰）的婚姻破裂，或多或少给了李梅（马伊琍 饰）和兰心（袁立 饰）这对好姐妹的生活带来一些冲击。李梅原是某证券公司的干练女性，但为了家庭和孩子而放弃许多机会。她身为设计师的丈夫郭洋（佟大为 饰）在外拼命打拚，李梅也却愿当一个相夫教子的传统女性；兰心的丈夫许小宁（黄磊 饰）性格温吞，结果致令所经营的公司濒临倒闭。兰心接过丈夫的烂摊子，凭借一股韧劲儿终于让公司起死回生，夫妻的角色似乎发生对调。与这对年轻夫妇同住一幢公寓的老常（刘金山 饰）也经历过婚姻的失败，如今他与过气的女模特陈梦（于娜 饰）再次走入婚姻殿堂，却也依然无法避免磕磕绊绊。 在商品经济的和浮躁气息的冲击下，他们能否坚守一份纯真笃定的爱情？。
